Kajsa & Nisse Strinning

String® was already starting to take shape in Nils Strinning's mind when the publishing house Bonnier announced a competition to design a bookshelf in 1949. The competition rules required that the new bookshelf be affordable and easy to deliver and assemble - something that was clearly suitable for many Swedish homes. Their shelf won the gold medal and became an instant success. In parallel, the Strinnings continued to develop the idea, and String® eventually grew into a complete furniture system with functions and accessories. Today, more than 70 years later, String® remains one of Sweden's best-selling and best-loved designs, and is internationally acclaimed.

Nils Strinning was an architect and an inventor. Nils had an eye for identifying people's needs and an imagination for solving problems. The hassles of everyday life that other designers don't notice were attractive challenges for Nils. Nils was impatient, whereas Kaisa was calm, studying ideas deeply, improving them, and carefully drawing them into blueprints. Therefore, it can be said that Nils would not have been able to realize many of his projects without Kaisa, his partner and wife. Kaisa was never in a supporting role to her husband. Throughout their careers, the Strinnings designed practical objects such as plate racks, wire trays, and garbage bag holders to make life more comfortable and organized. It was their belief that "form should always pursue function" that led to the fact that many of their works are considered iconic today.

MADE IN SWEDEN

Over 95% of String Furniture's furniture is made in Sweden, which means you can visit most of our factories directly to discuss materials and production. However, to ensure the best quality, some parts are manufactured elsewhere - for example, our Museum series is cast and polished outside Sweden.
Everything we do at String Furniture is somehow connected to sustainability. At the top of our list is what we call longevity. Timeless design and high quality furniture are built to last. By using durable materials and manufacturing with care, we create furniture with character and visual expression that can be enjoyed for years, even decades, and that is beautiful and inviting every day. We also only use renewable, recyclable or recycled materials. Since 2005, String Furniture has owned the iconic String System. We continue to evolve the original String System by introducing contemporary colors, new materials and fresh accessories.
