The Embody seat is made up of four different layers of support. Each has its own material properties and is manufactured differently, but together they adapt to the exact shape of your body, even conforming to your contours. These layers are designed to allow air to pass through, keeping you comfortable and cool.
When Bill Stumpf, who has designed numerous chairs including the Aeron, Equa and Ergon chairs and has worked with Herman Miller for 30 years, came to the company with a new idea, it was no wonder that the response was, "Can such a chair be designed and manufactured?"
Is there a way to do more than just reduce the negative effects of sitting on the body? That was the original idea that Jeff Weber and Bill Stumph had in their design studio.
"No matter what the product, it's impossible to design without empathy for the user," says Weber, who also designed the Caper chair. "As technology-based design became mainstream, we as designers spent more and more time working at computers. I was personally experiencing the problems that can occur when sitting for long periods of time."
More than 20 doctors and physicians in the fields of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy and ergonomics contributed their expertise to the chair's development, and the Embody chair sets a new standard for pressure distribution, natural posture, and healthy movement in ergonomic seating.
Herman Miller
Design is about solving fundamental human problems
Founded in 1923 (its predecessor, Star Furniture Company, was founded in 1905), Herman Miller bet its survival on contemporary furniture during the Great Depression of the 1930s. This gamble was a great success, and in 1945, Herman Miller stopped producing traditional furniture and focused on contemporary furniture, which would later be called modern furniture. In 1960, the company began to explore the true needs of office workers and the needs of companies and organizations. They realized that office productivity was a major issue in business. The "Action Office" that was developed in this way became the norm for subsequent office systems. Herman Miller believes that innovation is not a goal but the result of research. Innovation comes from research into customer needs, exploration of materials and processes, and design that responds to social and economic innovations. Of course, designers add inspiration on top of that. Charles and Ray Eames' plywood chairs, Robert Propst's Action Office, Bill Stumph's Ergon and Aeron chairs, and Ayse Birsel's Resolve system are all born from such interactions. What connected them to Herman Miller is the shared belief that "design is meant to solve fundamental human problems." Rather than designing for the sake of design, they have a passion for creating new designs from research into the human body and the environment that surrounds us. The quality control department repeats the industry standard 100,000 seat tests 1 million times. The unparalleled research and development department develops materials, and the manufacturing department realizes cutting-edge manufacturing processes. In all of these, we never forget Herman Miller's idea of creating new designs through research into the human body and environment. Herman Miller's products are an inevitable form born from research into problems related to the act of sitting. In order to save global resources and reduce environmental impact, Herman Miller's products strive to improve the durability and reliability of its products, and work chairs have a 12-year product warranty period. The other side of innovation is equally important: risk-taking. Herman Miller strives to maintain a willingness to take risks. As the company grows and takes on greater capital responsibilities, the pressure to minimize risk increases. But Herman Miller continues to take risks by introducing new products that it knows will be successful -- and sometimes even game-changing innovations.
