The idea for Design Within Reach came to Rob Forbes in 1998 when he was trying to incorporate simple and classic furniture into his apartment in London, where he lived at the time. The works of designers such as Eames, Le Corbusier, and Saarinen were "out of reach" products for everyone. He realized that a better way was needed. He purchased and stocked 20 containers of products. Architects, interior designers, and many others responded immediately. Although it was difficult to negotiate with leading furniture manufacturers, Herman Miller appreciated the concept of Design Within Reach from the beginning and generously cooperated in sales. It was not a coincidence, but a necessity, that Design Within Reach became a part of the Herman Miller family in 2015.
