Jean Prouvé
Jean Prouvé placed great importance on structure in both architecture and furniture design. The front legs of his masterpiece, "Standard," are made of thin steel tubes, while the rear legs, which bear more weight, are made of thick hollow steel plates. Jean Prouvé, who called himself a "constructor," was both a designer and an engineer throughout his life, and also manufactured his own furniture with his own hands.
Jean Prouvé opened his own workshop in Nancy in 1924 after gaining experience as a blacksmith. However, as the scale of his company grew, disagreements arose with shareholders who were seeking profit, and he sold his company in 1953. Over the next few decades, Prouvé was appointed as a consulting engineer for many architectural projects built in Paris, and in 1971, he once again made his mark in architectural history by selecting Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers' design as the winner of the design competition for the Pompidou Center. Jean Prouvé's work is so wide-ranging that it can be said to cover almost everything that can be produced industrially, from letter openers to door and window components, lighting, furniture, prefabricated houses, modular building systems, and large-scale exhibition designs.

Cultural Activities <br>Vitra is also active in the cultural sector beyond its business activities. It invests a large portion of its profits in preserving cultural heritage in design and architecture, supporting various institutions around the world, such as the Eames Foundation, which preserves the Eames House in Pacific Palisades, California, the Alvar Aalto Foundation in Finland, and the Barragan Foundation in Switzerland.
Furthermore, the Vitra Campus, located on a vast site in Weil am Rhein on the Swiss-German border, is a one-of-a-kind experimental space for architecture and design, and a place where architecture, design and art are open to everyone on an equal footing. The ongoing development of the Vitra Campus is also a sign of our mutual, long-term relationship with the region of Weil am Rhein.
