The Wooden Doll is based on the original wooden doll that was displayed in the Girard House (now housed at the Vitra Design Museum).

Alexander Girard was an avid collector of textiles and folk art from all over the world during his many travels, and his Santa Fe home is filled with ornate wooden dolls that he designed and crafted himself, drawing inspiration from his extensive collection.

Alexander Girard
In 1952, Girard became the design director of Herman Miller's textile division. His first fabric collection was comprised of geometric patterns such as stripes, circles, and triangles. Girard was deeply interested in and inspired by folk art from around the world (art that has traditional forms and styles based on religion, ethnicity, or region). The repetition and variation of simple motifs found in folk art was an important theme in Girard's overall textile design. His unique sensibility for color and color combinations also reflects the influence of folk art.
