Wilton C. Dinges founded Emeco (Electric Machine and Equipment Company) in Hanover, Pennsylvania in 1940. During World War II, the US Navy needed a special chair. The US government gave him a big task: to make a chair that could withstand saltwater and sea air, was lightweight, non-corrosive and fireproof . Emeco took on the challenge. Aluminum was the obvious choice to develop a chair that was light, strong and durable. The 1006 Navy Chair was born.
The Navy Chair is finally completed after going through 77 different steps. It embodies the high level of Emeco's aluminum processing technology. Emeco chairs are rare handmade products in the United States. Each chair is carefully crafted by skilled craftsmen, giving it a sculptural form, warmth, and presence. Aluminum is also very strong, lightweight, and fire-resistant. It is non-corrosive, non-magnetic, and non-bacterial. In addition, it can be recycled infinitely.

EMECO

Wilton Carlyle Dinges founded the Electrical and Mechanical Equipment Company (Emeco) in Hanover, Pennsylvania, employing local steelworkers. World War II brought a major change in his business, with the creation of the 1006 Navy chair to meet the needs of the U.S. Navy.
It's a harsh environment. Salt water, salt wind, the occasional torpedo blast. To survive, you need materials that are durable. In 77 steps, ordinary scrap aluminum becomes very strong. What works in one demanding environment will eventually fit in so many others.
