Using its own advanced fiberglass manufacturing techniques, made possible by a low-volatile, monomer-free "dry bond" process, Herman Miller is now able to recreate the Eames' original 1950 shell fiberglass chairs.
Like the original shell chair, it features the beautiful surface finish that has been popular since its release, as well as the distinctive fiberglass fibers.

Charles and Ray Eames manufactured their first shell chair out of fiberglass in 1950, and it was a success. However, as the environmental risks associated with fiberglass products became apparent, Herman Miller made the decision to discontinue manufacturing fiberglass shells until a more suitable material could be found. In 2001, Herman Miller reintroduced the shell chair in polypropylene.
